Overview

This qualification allows individuals to develop post-trade skills and knowledge to become specialists within the production nursery industry. The nursery industry expects this qualification to be achieved to meet job outcomes at this level.

The nursery supervisor is responsible for a number of workers and nursery activities. Responsibilities include:

  • supervising and training staff
  • overseeing nursery sales
  • coordinating nursery production
  • implementing propagation plans
  • recommending plants, products and treatments
  • setting up promotional programs • managing a budget

Assessment 1 – Multiple written and research-based tasks covering follow key criteria

  • Identify and evaluate need for chemical use
  • Develop a chemical use risk management strategy.
  • Develop and implement procedures for chemical management and use.
  • Identify training and supervision needs and solutions for chemical use in the workplace.
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of a chemical use strategy.

Part B : Practical Installation of an irrigation system or measurement of an irrigation install

Part A- Extended written questions covering follow key criteria

  • Assess the need for water inputs
  • Monitor irrigation system and plant response

Part B – Moisture analysis (practical activity)

ANZSCO 362411 Nursery person

Entry requirements

The job roles for this qualification require an individual to be able to provide technical support and manage technical staff. This requires the individual to have underpinning technical skills in
order to successfully undertake the qualification. As such it is critical that an individual has the skills and knowledge in the application of:
• cultivating, growing and harvesting/production skills for a variety of plant types, including pest and disease control
•  technology and equipment that apply in a production nursery or retail nursery workplace
•  health and safety, pest management and biosecurity processes and regulations that apply in a production nursery or retail nursery workplace
The skills and knowledge may have been acquired through completion of a Certificate III or higher qualification relating to nursery or horticulture, or industry experience.

Age: 16 plus
English Proficiency Requirements: all candidates must complete a Language Literacy & Numeracy Assessment, assessed by the Language Studies Department.
Academic Requirements: Completion of Certificate IV in Horticulture or related field or equivalent to Australian Year 12 general schooling or 2 years work experience in horticultural related field.
